In this article we can see why Indian election commission and Law commission of India are in news.

Supreme court said Chief election commissioner tenure is truncated and they are not completing their full tenure. CEC is autonomous constitutional authority. President of India appoints Chief election commissioner and other election commissioners. They have fixed tenure of six years or up to the age of 65 years whichever is earlier. They enjoy same status and salary as available to supreme court judges.

Election commission of India conducts Lok sabha, Rajya sabha,state legislative assembly elections and offices of president and vice president of India . constitutional provision part XV (article 324-329) of Indian constitution deals with election and establish a commission for these matters. After Election commissioner amendment Act,1989 it has become multi member body. President appoints CEC and election commissioners.

CEC can resign or removed similar manner like Supreme court judges by Parliament. There is no specific eligibility criteria or qualification prescribed for the post of CEC and other commissioners. They are not debarred from further appointment by government.

If CEC has full term then only the provisions of removal as mentioned in constitution can be effected. This was mentioned by supreme court.

Law commission of India: Recently government has constituted 22 nd law commission under retired Justice Rituraj Awasthi. Other members are Justice K.T .Sankaran,M. Karunanithi, Anand paliwal, D. P. Verma and Raka Arya. It is a non statutory body to carryout research in the field of law. It can make recommendation to government .The tenure of the commission is three years. It has the duty to suggest ways to improve and reform legislation to implement directive principle of state policy.

Legislation that are no longer relevant should be repealed or revised. Laws affecting poor are investigated and socio economic laws are reviewed. Identifying laws that need to be modified and offer recommended for changes. This law commission may have to deal with the issues relating to Uniform civil code.

First law commission of India was constituted in 1955 and was led by shri. M.C .Setalvad.
