Kannada action drama Kantara, which originally released on September 30, has gone from strength to strength with each screening. The decision to dub it in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi made it a pan-India film, and garnered rich awards including record box office numbers. The film, which became the most viewed film in Karnataka last month, registering over 77 lakh views in 25 days, has now crossed another milestone.Sources in the production house, Hombale Films, say that the Rishabh Shetty directorial has touched the Rs 300 crore mark at the box office, half of which has been achieved in Karnataka.Producer SR Prabhu, who has distributed the film in Tamil Nadu through his Dream Warrior Pictures, is enthused, The film recorded its highest collection last Sunday, October 30.He notes, exactly a month after its original release.
After all, it is a commendable achievement , While he refrains from sharing the actual numbers, he agrees that the film has done ‘incredibly well commercially’.”It continues to do well. We believe it has another two-three weeks to go.”This phenomenal success has drawn comparisons with the blockbuster success of various dubbed versions of another Kannada film, KGF 2. However, Prabhu believes that the comparison is unfair to both the films. There are a lot of differences like the number of opening day, the number of screens allotted… For its scale, Kantara has done huge numbers, but let’s not compare it with KGF 2. In its fifth week, Kantara is still running in over 100 screens in Tamil Nadu.Kantara’s portrayal of rituals and local customs has drawn praise and Prabhu also attributes the film’s success to its rootedness.Kantara created a new world that enthralled audiences across the country. While the story may take place in a specific interior part of Karnataka, the film’s success shows h ow everyone relates to it,indicated Prabhu.
