Greece did not respond offer to monitor migrant boat

Greece has not accepted an offer to send a plane to monitor a migrant boat that later sank which led to loss of life of many, EU border officials say.

At least 82 people are known to have died in the incident, but the UN says a further 500 may have drowned in the accident.

Greece has faced criticism for not responding to send a plane to monitor the migrant boat and to respond to the disaster.

The migrant boat hardly moved in the hours before it capsized . This contradicts the Greek claim that it was on a safe, steady course.

The overcrowded migrant fishing boat had started from Libya and was first found early in the morning of 13 June in international waters and was moving towards Greece.

It was spotted by a plane operated by  the EU’s border agency, Frontex.

Frontex claims since the Greek coast guard has not replied to its offer to send the plane back to the fishing boat to monitor the situation it couldn’t send.

The Greek authorities have refused the claim. Further they rejected that they  didn’t act quickly enough to the unfolding tragedy, insisting those onboard told coastguards they wanted to be left alone so they could travel to Italy.

But the analysis of the movement of other ships on the day of the disaster suggests the vessel was hardly moving for at least 7hours before it capsized – which contradictsthe official account..

The Greek coastguard has not replied on this  claim that it has  not respond to the offer of sending the plane by  Frontex.

Officials have said the boat has drown around 80km (50 miles) south-west of Pylos the coastal town after 02:04 on 14 June local time.Though 100 people survived, 750 were said to be in the boat as per the survivors statement. There were about 100 children on the boat.

Rana Sanaullah, Pakistan’s interior minister has said that at least 350 Pakistanis were onboard, adding that this even in terrorist attack no such huge casualty.

Egyptians and Syrians are also were among those feared dead.

Nine Egyptian men on Monday appeared in court, Kalamata ,the Greek city to face charges of negligent manslaughter, exposing lives to danger, causing a shipwreck and human trafficking.

On various grounds all pleaded not guilty.
