Varisu is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language drama film. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally who co-wrote it with Hari and Aashishore Solomon. Produced by Dil Raju, Sirish under Sri Venkateswara Creations and PVP Cinemas. The film stars Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna. The music is composed by Thaman S, cinematography is handled by Karthik Palani and editing is done by Praveen K.L.Principal photography began in April 2022 in Chennai. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on January 12, 2023, in the week of Pongal.

Development:
On 26 September 2021, Vijay’s 66th film as a lead actor was announced with the working title Thalapathy 66. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, it is the first Tamil film produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under Sri Venkateswara Creations, and Paidipally’s second Tamil film after Thozha. 2016). Paidipally said that the makers initially intended to announce the project earlier that year, but had to postpone their plans due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.Vijay was reported to have received a payment of ₹1.18 billion (US$15 million) for the film. [7] It was also reported that he would play in two avatars as the film would be set in two different time periods. Paidipally wrote the story and screenplay along with Hari and Ashishore Solomon. Raju Murugan was signed on as the dialogue writer, but he opted out of the project due to other film commitments. Murugan was replaced by Vivek for additional screenplay &dialogue.Cinematography will be handled by. Karthik Palani while the film is edited by Praveen K L Dil Raju described the film as “family-oriented” like most of Vijay’s films of the 1990s.While several reports speculated the film to be a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, the makers clarified that the film would be shot only in Tamil. The Vaarisu title was announced for 21 June 2022, on the eve of Vijay’s 48th birthday.

Casting:
In October 2021, Prakash Raj was reported to play a pivotal role in the film, collaborating with Vijay after over a decade from Villu (2009). On 5 April 2022, Rashmika Mandanna’s birthday, it was announced that she would be the lead actress. This is his second Tamil film after Sultan (2021). The makers initially wanted Pooja Hegde to be the lead actress, but eventually decided against including her as she was previously doing back-to-back films with superstars, including Beast (2022) with Vijay. The day after Mandana’s announcement, R.K. Sarathkumar joined the cast. On 26 April 2022, Shaam confirmed to be a part of the film. On 3 May, Yogi Babu confirmed to be a part of the film. Five days later, the production house confirmed Prabhu & Jayasudha as part of the cast, and two days later, Telugu actors Srikanth, Sangeetha Krish , Samyuktha Shanmughanathan. In early June, a picture of Khushboo on the sets was leaked. though she initially denied being part of the cast, his presence was confirmed on 26 October. On 23 Aug, Ganesh Venkatraman confirmed his presence in the film.

Filming:
The opening puja ceremony for the film’s shooting was held on 6 April 2022 in Chennai, and the first schedule was then followed by filming. It took place on a specially constructed set at Film City on East Coast Road, Chennai and was completed on 15 April. Initially, 75% of the shooting was planned to take place in Hyderabad, but Vijay requested the production to be based in Chennai to benefit local FEFSI members, and the makers reportedly agreed.Despite this, the Hyderabad schedule began on 3 May and ended by 23 May. The Chennai schedule resumed on 3 June, with recurring portions also being shot in Film City. It includes a song sequence and some talkie parts. Despite the stringent measures taken by the production team, pictures taken from the sets were leaked on the internet and by 15 June, the team planned to shift the shooting location to a private location, resulting in halting of filming. With the second schedule starting in July, 45% of filming was finished by 23 June. The fourth schedule began in Hyderabad on 5 July, and was completed within three weeks. The team left for Visakhapatnam in late July for the fifth schedule; Paidipally had planned to shoot the film at live locations in the city, and venue details were not disclosed to avoid fan gatherings. [43] Despite the decision by the Telugu Film Producers Guild (TFPG) to stop shooting Telugu films from 1 August 2022, TFPG chief Dil Raju assured that the shooting of Warisu would continue as it was a Tamil language film and not a bilingual. During production in Hyderabad, several stills from the film were leaked, and fans criticized the carelessness of the production house. In mid-August 2022, the shooting of a song featuring Vijay and Mandanna was conducted, and has been choreographed by Jani Master. The team went to Hyderabad in September to film another song with the lead pair and the choreographer. The final schedule began on 25 September, with two fight sequences and two songs remaining to be shot in this schedule. In his first collaboration with Vijay, the music is composed by S. Thaman ,There are six songs in the album. The first single titled “Ranjitham” was released on 5 November 2022.

Theatrical:
Varisu is scheduled to hit the theaters on January 12, 2023, in the week of Pongal. It was planned to have a dubbed version in Telugu titled Varasudu alongside a Hindi dubbed version, although there was a risk of moving the release of the Telugu version to an earlier date than the Tamil version, as That the Telugu Film Producers Council has urged the theater owners to give first priority to release only straight Telugu films releasing on 12 January 2023 in the states of Andhra and Telangana during the Pongal festival. Despite this, the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association announce that the Telugu version would release as planned after talks with the Telugu Film Producers Council.
