Gig worker : Code on social security 2020 defines a gig worker as a person who performs work or participate in work arrangements and earn from such activities outside the traditional employer -employee relationship. Boston consulting group estimates India’s gig workforce comprises 15 million workers employed across industries such as software and other professional services.

       India is the fifth largest country in flexi – staffing globally. Gig workers may be platform workers  like those working in online  software apps like zomato and ola or non platform workers like casual laborers working in part time jobs with conventional sector. Gig workers helped many platform companies to stay afloat during pandemic.
     In digital era workers can choose their work location. Employer select talent from anywhere without being bound by geography. 
      Raising demand for contractual labor ,emergence of machine learning, startup ecosystem encouraged gig economy.
It has potential to add 1.25% to GDP over longterm.
        As per NITI Aayog report gig workers will be 2.35cr by 2029-30.
         Gig workers don’t have job security and they don’t have regular wages. They have limited access to internet and digital technology. They don’t get work place entitlement .Platform workers can be encouraged to start their own business by providing institutional credit like unsecured loan which can be classified as priority sector lending. 
          Skill development of youth and supporting small businesses are key solutions. Code on social security 2020 classifies gig workers as a new category.
Paid leave , health access and accident insurance, sick leave and income support have to be ensured .
            Women can work anywhere without geographical boundaries according to their qualification. But if there is social security cover then they are protected.
Code of social security 2020 mandates compulsory registration of gig workers.
For registration age should be between 16-60yrs of age . The code provides for social security benefits like accidental insurance, life and disability cover ,old age protection, health and maternity benefits, creche eye. They can’t claim labour rights.( Note : please verify facts before using )
